DAMASCUS, Syria (Reuter) – Syria said Thursday that Israeli agents planted a bomb on a bus in central Damascus Tuesday, killing nine people and wounding others. “Nine people were killed and 44 others were wounded in the criminal action against a transport bus in Damascus,” an official spokesman told the Syrian news agency SANA. “This terrorist, cowardly and criminal action comes within the framework of threats which were launched recently by Israeli officials that aim at killing the peace process,” he said. “Agents of the (Israeli intelligence agency) Mossad utilized preparations for the New Year celebrations Tuesday 31.12.1996 with people leaving to their towns and planted an explosive device inside the bus which exploded minutes after it left the bus station at noon,” the official said. Earlier a Beirut-based businessman who has just returned from a trip to Damascus told Reuters in Nicosia, Cyprus, that at least 15 people were killed and 50 wounded in the explosion at Al-Intilak Center bus and taxi station as the bus prepared to leave to the northern city of Aleppo.
